Since the time of the Aztecs, cloths have been hand woven from the agave cactus. The catus leaves are pounded to extract the fibres, which are then cleaned and hand spun using a drop spindle. The threads are then woven using a backstrap loom. The whole process is labour intensive, but the craft produces an income for the rural women’s cooperative in Mexico and makes a positive difference to the lives of the villagers. It is an ecologically sustainable industry making a better product.
